Drag Racing Parachute Kits

The height from the ground to the drag car parachute mount depends on the vehicle. For a door car, the general rule of thumb is through the crankshaft/camshaft centerline of the vehicle. However, always consult an experienced chassis builder to get the proper answer. The mount angle should be 45 degrees upward and behind the spoiler (not under it) in order for the chute to properly open. A net must always be used on a car with wheelie bars to prevent the parachute from getting tangled or going under the car.

TThe packing method for a drag car parachute is different for each type and brand. For this reason, the instructions from the manufacturer (as well as a video if available) need to be followed. In general, the first thing to do is untangle the chute and shroud lines, and pull the chute out with some tension on the lines. The canopy then needs to be folded in the recommended manufacturer method. It is then compressed into the deployment bag top first with the shroud lines being packed last. Finally, the deployment bag is closed with the flap opposite of the ripcord being the last one to close when completing the packing of a parachute. The closing loop must be in safe condition and properly tied. The parachute release cable end is then passed through the closing loop, locking the flaps together, to keep the parachute from deploying until the release is pulled. If the parachute has a pilot chute and launcher spring, additional steps are required.

The amount of time a drag race parachute lasts depends on the number of times it is used and how it is stored when not in use. A chute will actually last longer if it is used often and stored in an open, dry location out of the sun, rather than left packed in the bag. Being kept in the bag over time without opening it will lead to deterioration and rot as it needs to breathe so as not to trap moisture. A drag car parachute left packed in the deployment bag for a long time might not function properly when it is needed.

In NHRA and IHRA racing, any race car that surpasses 150 mph in the quarter mile is required to have a parachute. If the race car goes over 200 mph, then dual parachutes are required. There are different size requirements depending on the speed and the weight of the vehicle as well. A Mustang parachute kit, for example, will require a different size than a dragster or a large and heavy vehicle.
