High Performance Automotive Water Pumps
Automotive water pumps move coolant through your engine, radiator, and heater core, so they control both engine temperature and cabin heat. This category covers electric and mechanical pumps plus the pulleys, spacers, gaskets, bolts, and fittings you need to install them. At JEGS, you can compare flow ratings, drive styles, and fitment for street and strip builds, then order the whole cooling package together.

Electric vs. Mechanical Automotive Water Pumps
The main difference is how the pump is driven. A mechanical pump is belt-driven, so its speed changes with engine RPM and pulley diameter. An electric pump runs at a constant speed from your 12V system, no matter what the engine is doing.
Belt-driven pumps are simple and remain the standard choice for stock replacement and many street cars. Browse mechanical water pumps when you want OEM-style fitment or an aluminum upgrade that bolts to your existing brackets.
Electric pumps take the belt load off the crank and keep coolant moving at idle, which matters in traffic and in the staging lanes. You'll find electric water pumps in engine-mounted and remote-mount styles. They draw current, so plan for a relay and properly sized wiring.

How to Choose a Water Pump for Your Car
Start with your engine family, then match flow, length, rotation, and clearance to your build. For a stock replacement, confirm your year, make, model, and engine before you order.
Performance builds need a few more checks before a pump goes in your cart:
- Match the pump to your engine family, such as small-block Chevy, big-block Chevy, or LS.
- Compare flow in gallons per minute (GPM), like the 55 GPM Meziere 300 Series versus the 42 GPM 680-WP150SHD.
- Pick a long or short pump to fit your brackets, like the JEGS 555-51049 long or March Performance 655-P125 short big-block Chevy pumps.
- Confirm rotation, since many serpentine drives spin the pump opposite to a V-belt setup.
- Check balancer clearance, because the JEGS 555-50931 electric pump requires a 6-3/4 in. balancer.
Getting these five specs right up front saves you from returns, mismatched pulleys, and belts that won't line up.
Does a High-Flow Water Pump Make a Difference?
Yes, when coolant flow is what's limiting your cooling system. If your engine runs hot at idle or low speed, a stock belt-driven pump may be turning too slowly to keep up. A high-flow pump, or an electric pump running at constant speed, can close that gap. If your check-engine light shows P2181, see our P2181 cooling system performance code guide.
More flow won't fix every problem. If the radiator, fan, shroud, or hoses are undersized, the heat still has nowhere to go. Look at the whole system and pair your pump with matching cooling, heating & A/C parts when you upgrade.
Pump design matters as much as the flow number. Edelbrock Victor Series aluminum pumps distribute coolant to both sides of the engine within 1%. That balance helps keep one cylinder bank from running hotter than the other.
The Victor Series also uses 3/4 in. ball and roller bearings. For racers, an electric pump wired to its own switch can keep coolant circulating with the engine off between rounds.
Water Pump Components and Installation Parts
A clean pump install takes more than the pump itself. Seals, hardware, and drive parts all affect fitment and whether the job stays leak-free.
Have these parts on hand before you pull the old pump:
- Pulleys set pump speed on belt-driven setups, so diameter changes how fast the pump turns at a given RPM.
- Use water pump spacers & adapters to correct pulley alignment, like Meziere WPS100 spacers for big-block Chevy.
- New water pump gaskets seal the pump to the block and stop leaks at the mating surface.
- Fresh water pump bolts restore clamping force when the originals are corroded, stretched, or the wrong length.
- The right water pump fittings connect hoses to remote pumps, like the -AN O-ring fittings on the JEGS 555-50950.
- Relay kits protect electric pump wiring, like the Meziere 680-WIK346 kit with its 30-amp relay.
- Rebuild kits refresh a worn electric pump without replacing the whole unit.
Order these with your pump so one missing seal doesn't stall your install. If you spot a leak after the job, use our guide to finding and fixing coolant leaks.
Performance Water Pump Brands at JEGS
JEGS carries water pumps from established performance cooling brands, plus JEGS-brand options for popular engine families. Each brand covers a different mix of pump styles and kits.
Here's what each brand brings to your build:
- Meziere offers center-section, remote-mount bulkhead, and radiator-mounted dual-outlet electric pumps.
- Edelbrock builds aluminum mechanical pumps, including the Victor Series.
- Proform offers a small-block Chevy electric pump kit, 778-66225BK1, with the harness and relay included.
- Holley offers complete water pump assemblies, such as the 97-200.
- Frostbite Performance Cooling makes a small-block Chevy electric water pump, the 569-22-111.
- Davies Craig adds more electric water pump choices for street and race builds.
- March Performance makes short big-block Chevy water pumps, such as the 655-P125.
Not sure where to start? Filter by engine family first, then compare flow, drive style, and included hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions About Automotive Water Pumps
How do I know if my water pump is going bad?
Watch for coolant leaking from the weep hole, a grinding or whining bearing, or a pulley that wobbles. Rising engine temperature is another warning sign. If you spot any of these, inspect the pump before the problem gets worse.
Can you drive with a bad water pump?
You shouldn't drive any farther than a safe place to pull over. A failing pump can't move enough coolant, and an overheating engine risks serious damage. Replace the pump as soon as you confirm the problem.
Should I replace the water pump gasket and bolts?
Replace the gasket every time you install a pump, since a used gasket rarely reseals. Reuse bolts only if the threads are clean and undamaged. Swap in new bolts if the originals are corroded or stretched, or if your new pump needs a different length.
Do I need a new pulley or spacer with a new water pump?
Usually not, if the new pump has the same hub height and shaft as the old one. Before you tighten the belt, lay a straightedge across the pulleys to check alignment. If they don't line up, you'll need a spacer or a different pulley.
What does GPM mean on an electric water pump?
GPM stands for gallons per minute, the pump's rated coolant flow. The JEGS 555-50931 small-block Chevy pump is rated at 35 GPM, while the JEGS 555-50950 billet remote pump is rated at 50 GPM. Both draw 6 amps, so make sure your charging system and wiring can support the load.
