Exhaust Turndowns & Turndown Tips
Exhaust turndown parts aim your exhaust toward the ground instead of straight back or under the car. You'll find slip-on turndowns, flanged header turndowns, bolt-on kits and tailpipes here for street, strip and truck builds. Use the size, material and fitment tips below to pick the right turndown the first time.

What Does an Exhaust Turndown Do for Your Car?
An exhaust turndown is a short, angled section of pipe that points exhaust flow downward at the end of your system. It sends hot gases away from the underside of the vehicle, so fewer fumes find their way into the cabin. That matters on open-header strip cars, cars with side exits and street cars with short systems.
Turndowns can also cut drone and change the tone you hear from the driver's seat. They won't replace a muffler, but they change where the sound goes. If you're still building the rest of the system, read up on muffler types and exhaust sound before you pick your outlets.
Turndowns are one piece of a complete exhaust plan. Browse our full lineup of headers and exhaust parts for pipe, mufflers and hardware. Then compare all exhaust cutouts, turndowns and tips to see which outlet style suits your build.
How Do You Pick the Right Turndown Exhaust Tip Size?
Start by measuring the outside diameter (OD) of the pipe you're attaching to. A slip-on turndown is listed by its inside diameter (ID), so a 3.5 in. ID turndown slips over a 3.5 in. OD pipe. Guessing is the most common mistake we see, so follow our guide on how to measure exhaust inlet and outlet diameter first.
JEGS Exhaust Turndowns are made from aluminized steel and run about 13.5 in. long. You can get a 2.5 in. ID pair, or 3.5 in. ID and 4.0 in. ID singles. Each one slips over the pipe and includes a clamp, so installation is simple.
Need a 3 inch exhaust turndown? You'll find 3 in. options in both flanged and bolt-on header kit styles. Use the inlet size and outlet size filters to narrow results to your pipe diameter. If you're between sizes, re-measure before you order rather than forcing a loose fit.
Slip-On vs. Flanged Exhaust Turndown: Which Fits Your Build?
Your choice comes down to where the turndown mounts. Slip-on turndowns clamp over a tailpipe or collector. Flanged turndowns bolt straight to the header flange, which is a clean option for open-header cars. If you're still choosing your exhaust foundation, compare exhaust manifolds vs. headers first.
Here's how the main header turndown styles compare:
- JEGS Header Turndowns come in 3 in. and 3-1/2 in. bolt-on kits with two 18 in. extensions, two 13.5 in. turndowns, gaskets, hardware and clamps.
- JEGS 3 in. Flanged Turndowns bolt up for a direct header connection, and slip-on header versions are also available.
- Granatelli offers a 2.5 in. V-band turndown in 304 stainless with a rotatable 45-degree outlet, gaskets and a companion clamp.
- Granatelli also sells 3.0 in. turndowns with a 3-bolt flange and gasket, sold as a set of 2, plus flanged kits.
- Car Chemistry flanged turndowns bolt to the header flange and use patented 2- or 3-disk CC inserts.
The JEGS bolt-on kits are made in the USA. Car Chemistry turndowns come in 2.5, 3 and 3.5 in. sizes.
Which Materials, Finishes and Styles Should You Consider?
Material and finish affect how your turndown holds up to heat, road grime and weather. Aluminized steel is a practical, budget-friendly choice for street cars and trucks. Stainless steel, like the 304 stainless used on Granatelli V-band turndowns, is a strong pick for a clean look that lasts.
Car Chemistry offers its flanged turndowns in black paint or Cermakrome ceramic coating. Dynatech builds an exhaust turndown with a 4 in. inlet and 4 in. outlet, plus turndowns with a cone or cone insert. Dynomax offers a 2.75 in. OD x 12 in. long turndown, aluminized tail pipes and a universal exhaust pipe spout. Stainless Works rounds things out with a tip turn down.
Use the page filters to sort by material, color, finish, overall length, usage and position. The usage filter helps you separate street, strip and race parts quickly. Position lets you match a turndown to where it'll sit in your system, so you're comparing only parts that fit.
How Do Turndowns Compare to Tips, Cutouts and Stacks?
Every exhaust outlet style solves a different problem. A turndown points gases toward the ground to keep fumes out of the cabin and away from the body. Straight exhaust tips are mostly about appearance and finishing the tailpipe cleanly.
Exhaust cutouts let you open the system before the mufflers for more sound on demand. Exhaust stacks route exhaust upward and suit trucks and show builds. Many street-strip cars pair a cutout with a turndown so the open exhaust points down rather than out. The cutout handles the sound, and the turndown handles the direction.
Prices in this category run from roughly $15 for simple turndowns to about $218 for complete kits. That range covers single slip-on tips, header turndown pairs and bolt-on kits with extensions. Ready to compare every option by fitment? Shop all turndown parts to see the full lineup in one place.

Frequently Asked Questions About Exhaust Turndown
Do turndowns change exhaust sound?
Yes, they can. A turndown changes where the sound exits, which can reduce drone and shift the tone you hear inside the car. It won't quiet your exhaust like a muffler does.
Are turndowns OK for NHRA sound requirements?
It depends on the turndown and insert you choose. Car Chemistry 2-disk inserts meet most NHRA sound requirements. Their 3-disk inserts are best for street-strip use.
Can you cut a turndown to length?
Slip-on turndowns can usually be trimmed to fit your ride height or bodywork. Check the overall length before you cut, and leave enough slip-over section for the clamp to grip. Flanged turndowns are best left at their stock length.
Do you need to weld an exhaust turndown?
Not usually. Slip-on turndowns like the JEGS Exhaust Turndowns slip over the pipe and include a clamp. Flanged turndowns and bolt-on header kits bolt up with the supplied gaskets and hardware.
Are turndowns good for trucks and diesel setups?
Yes. The JEGS 3.5 in. ID turndown is sized for most diesel and performance setups. Measure your tailpipe OD first to confirm the fit.
