Changing transmissions, transfer cases, tire diameter, or axle ratio throws speedometer calibration off, and on electronically controlled vehicles a wrong speed signal also affects shift timing. Correcting the drive gear or sensor at the source is the accurate fix rather than living with a speedometer that reads high or low.
