Cork-Rubber Blue Stripe Valve Cover Gasket Set, 3/16 in. for 1964-1991 Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth 273, 318, 340 and 360 LA V8
Fel-Pro 1609 is a performance valve cover gasket pair for Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth small block LA V8 engines, including 273, 318, 340, and 360 cu. in. applications. Its Blue Stripe cork-rubber material adds compressibility and thickness to help seal valve covers in high-performance or hard-use builds where oil leaks can spoil a clean engine bay.
Fel-Pro 1609 Features:
- Blue Stripe cork-rubber construction uses cork particles in a rubber binder to create a compressible sealing surface with no straight leak paths through the material.
- Extra-thick design measures approximately .172 to .188 in., with 3/16 in. nominal thickness commonly used for these gaskets.
- Engine coverage centers on LA small block V8 platforms: 273 cu. in., 318 cu. in., 340 cu. in., and 360 cu. in. Chrysler-family applications.
- Designed for performance and racing-style service where stronger valve cover sealing is needed than a thin standard gasket can provide.
Includes:
- Two valve cover gaskets
Useful during valve cover service, top-end reseals, small block LA refreshes, and high-performance builds using 273, 318, 340, or 360 cu. in. engines.
Verify valve cover style, cylinder head configuration, and engine family before ordering. The application data supports Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth LA small block V8 engines across the 1964-1991 range, but vehicle-level coverage may vary.
Cork-Rubber is the most frequently used material. FEL-PRO Blue Stripe premium-quality cork-rubber gaskets use evenly-sized cork particles evenly distributed throughout a rubber binder. The result is a compressible gasket without leak paths.
Fel-CoPrene synthetic rubber can offer longer life than cork-rubber. However, because it is more flexible than cork-rubber, it can be more difficult to install. Generally, a quick-drying contact adhesive should be used to bond the gasket to the valve cover before installation.

Rubber-Coated Fiber is used for some high heat applications, such as Chrysler big block V8 engines, where the valve cover is in close proximity to the exhaust manifold. These Fel-Pro gaskets are made of a stiff, high temperature fiber material coated with latex rubber.
Cork-Lam is used in applications where high vacuum or blowout conditions can be a problem. Cork-Lam uses a metal core with cork-rubber material chemically bonded to it on both sides. This construction allows for a thicker than normal gasket with exceptionally good torque retention and also allows for more clearance between the valve cover and valvetrain.
Composite Material is a superb choice for Pro-Stock, Funny Car/Dragster, and NASCAR race engines. Laminated over a steel core, the composite material offers maximum compression and torque retention in super-high vacuum conditions. The Fel-Pro gasket is also coated with silicone for even greater sealing and easier removal.
Molded Silicone Rubber gaskets provide for ease of installation and are great for on again/off again situations like valve lash setting. These Fel-Pro gaskets feature high-tech silicone material for long life and sealing, a solid steel core for strength and durability, and stainless steel compression limiters to prevent overtightening. This is an excellent choice for high vacuum race engines.
