The camshaft position sensor threads into a bore that is open to engine oil, so this seal is what keeps oil inside. A hardened seal weeps down the side of the block and gets blamed on a valve cover, and oil creeping into the sensor connector can also corrode the terminals and cause an intermittent signal fault.
