The canister coil is still the simplest ignition upgrade on a carbureted V8. This one uses 100:1 windings held in an oil-filled steel canister, which keeps the windings cool and secure while building the voltage needed to fire a plug under load. It mounts in most factory canister coil brackets and should be installed upright. A ballast resistor is required on a points ignition.
