AMC V8 Engines built from 1967-1991 are prone to cam & distributor gear failure. One of the biggest reasons is due to the incompatibility of metals between the cam & distributor drive gears usually from a distributor upgrade or from replacement of one or the other gears. It is always recommended to replace both cam & distributor gears as a matched set to eliminate the mating incompatibility from mismatched gears.
