Which Grille Part Do You Need for Your Build?

The part you need depends on what's damaged or what you want to change. Some vehicles use a one-piece grille, while others pair an outer shell with a separate insert.

Here's how the four main types break down:

• Complete grilles arrive as one assembly, like the 2003-07 GMC Sierra 1500/2500 grill with a chrome shell and black insert.
• Outer grill shells form the surround that frames the grille and gives the nose its shape.
• Center grille inserts fill the opening inside the shell, so you can change the look without replacing the frame.
• Small grille components, such as support brackets and emblems, handle mounting and finishing details.

Start by checking what's actually worn. If the shell is straight but the insert is cracked or faded, an insert alone may be all you need. If the mounting points are broken, replace the brackets before you install anything new. That way, your new grille sits straight and stays put.

What Hot Rod Grill Styles Can You Choose From?

For a hot rod grill, you can go traditional with a steel 1932 Ford grille and shell, or go custom with billet or mesh. The right pick depends on whether you want a period look or a modern one.

The Speedmaster PCE513.1006 is a steel grille for the 1932 Ford that comes with the shell and without a crank hole. Because the shell is included, you don't have to source the two pieces separately. Speedmaster started in 1979 as Pete's Performance.

If you want a custom car grill, style is the first choice to make. A billet grille uses flat, solid bars for a clean, modern front end. A mesh grille uses an open screen pattern that lets air through and gives the car a racier look.

Which Reproduction Grilles Match Original Muscle Cars and Trucks?

If you're restoring to original spec, reproduction grilles from OER and Auto Metal Direct follow factory designs. OER stands for Original Equipment Reproduction, and many of its parts are officially licensed by GM and the Chrysler Group.

Among classic car grills for muscle cars, OER lists a 1966 Nova/Chevy II standard grille and a 1971 Dodge Challenger front grill assembly.
