Hoods
Car hoods protect your engine bay, shape your vehicle's profile, and can make room for a taller intake or air cleaner. We carry replacement hoods in steel, fiberglass, and carbon fiber for muscle cars, classic trucks, and late-model performance builds. Use this page to compare hood types, materials, mounting styles, and brands before you choose.

Types of Car Hoods: Cowl Induction, OE-Style, and Custom
Most car hoods fall into three groups: OE-style replacements, cowl induction hoods, and custom designs. Pick based on whether you're restoring a factory look or clearing a taller engine setup. Hoods are part of our larger sheet metal and body panels category, so you can plan the hood alongside the rest of your front-end work.
Here's how each type fits a build:
- OE-style steel hoods follow factory lines for restorations like the 1967-1968 Mustang and 1967 Chevelle/El Camino SS.
- Cowl induction hoods add a raised center section in 2 in., 4 in., or 6 in. rise heights.
- Custom hoods include a 1-piece design for the 1947-1955 Chevrolet truck.
If you're keeping a stock engine, an OE-style hood keeps the car looking original. If you've added a taller intake, carburetor, or air cleaner, measure your clearance first. Then choose a cowl rise that covers it with room to spare.
Fiberglass vs. Steel vs. Carbon Fiber Hoods
Steel hoods give you factory fit and function, while fiberglass and carbon fiber hoods generally weigh less than steel. The right material depends on how you drive the car and what look you want.
A steel hood works with your factory latch and hinges, which makes it a natural fit for OE-style restorations and daily drivers. If you're chasing originality, steel keeps the panel feel and closing action close to stock.
Fiberglass hoods trim weight off the front of the car and make tall shapes easier to produce. That's why cowl rises taller than 2 in. are typically fiberglass. Many fiberglass hoods are built as lift-off designs for racing, so check the mounting style before you order.
Carbon fiber hoods also weigh less than steel and add a woven look that suits late-model performance cars. You'll usually pay more for carbon fiber, so it makes the most sense when appearance and weight both matter to your build.
Lift-Off vs. Bolt-On Hood Installation
A bolt-on hood mounts to your factory hinges and latch, while a lift-off hood skips the hinges and uses hood pins. Your choice comes down to street convenience versus fast engine access.
A bolt-on hood opens and closes like stock, so it's the easier pick for street cars and trucks you drive often. You keep the factory release, and the hood stays attached when it's open. If your original latch is worn or sticky, replace it with new hood latches before you set the hood gaps.
A lift-off hood comes completely off the car once you pull the pins. That's why you'll see them on drag and track cars, where crews need quick access between rounds. Lift-off fiberglass hoods require hood pins, so plan for pin placement and drilling during install. Because there's no hinge to hold it, you'll also need a safe place to set the hood down while you work.
Hood Brands for Muscle Cars and Trucks

For Gen 5 Camaro owners, Chevrolet Performance offers a COPO Camaro cowl-induction hood and a COPO Camaro carbon fiber hood.
Hood Hardware and Accessories
The right hardware finishes a hood install and keeps the hood working the way it should. Along with hoods, we carry hood insulation pads, under-hood cross braces, and hood props. These small parts are easy to overlook until the hood is already on the car.
Here's what each accessory does:
- Hood insulation pads attach to the underside of the hood and replace worn or missing factory pads.
- Under-hood cross braces add structural support beneath the hood.
- Hood props hold the hood open while you work in the engine bay.
If you're rebuilding the whole front end, line up your new hood with matching fenders and inner fenders so the panel gaps stay even. Test-fit the hood, fenders, and hardware together before any paint goes on. For install tips and project ideas, browse our hoods, scoops, and body tech articles.

Frequently Asked Questions About Car Hoods
Does a cowl induction hood add horsepower?
A cowl induction hood mainly adds clearance and a classic muscle car look. Any power gain depends on whether the hood feeds air from the base of the windshield into a sealed air cleaner. Without that setup, treat it as a clearance and styling upgrade.
Do I need to paint an aftermarket hood?
Yes, in most cases. Fiberglass and carbon fiber hoods usually need prep, primer, and paint before they match your car. Test-fit and adjust the hood before paint so you don't chip the finish later.
How do I know which hood fits my vehicle?
Add your year, make, and model with the vehicle selector at the top of the page to narrow the list to hoods for your vehicle. Then check each product's details for the exact years and body styles it covers. If you've changed your engine or intake, measure clearance before you pick a cowl rise.
How do I align a new hood after installation?
On a bolt-on hood, snug the hinge bolts just enough to hold the hood, then shift it until the gaps match the fenders and cowl. Adjust the rubber bump stops so the hood sits flush, and make sure the latch engages without slamming. A helper makes this easier, since a hood is awkward to position alone.
Do I need hood insulation with a new hood?
Hood insulation isn't required, but a pad can help keep engine heat off the hood's underside and cut under-hood noise. On a restoration, a pad helps the engine bay look closer to factory. Check that your new hood can accept a pad before you order one.
