The hood pad does two jobs at once. It absorbs engine noise before it reaches the cabin, and it keeps radiant heat off the underside of the hood so the paint above it does not discolor. Once the original starts to sag, crumble or shed insulation onto the engine, it is doing neither, and the replacement is a straightforward job with the hood open.
