Throttle Pedal Assembly & Components

A throttle pedal is a vehicle component that controls engine speed and rpm with input from the driver via a cable connecting it to the carburetor or throttle body on the engine. It can be attached with a firewall or floor mount and typically pivots, with the driver's foot pushing on the bottom of it resulting in the cable being pulled on the other end of the pedal. Race car pedals are made of steel or aluminum. Gas pedal hot rod are typically made of billet aluminum. (for example, used in a show truck like a Chevy C10).

When approaching how to fix a race car throttle pedal issue, begin by disconnecting the pedal from the throttle cable. Next, confirm if the throttle pedal issue is with the pedal itself, or with the cable, throttle return springs, or carburetor/throttle body linkage. If the throttle pedal is confirmed to be the issue, inspect it and determine if it can be repaired or lubricated. Otherwise, it will need to be replaced. If the throttle pedal is not the issue, next disconnect the throttle cable from the carburetor or throttle body and confirm the cable is working properly. If it is not working properly, determine if it can be repaired or if it needs to be replaced. If the throttle cable and throttle pedal are working properly, check the throttle linkage to confirm if it is binding or if the return springs have the desired tension needed and repair or replace the required components to solve the throttle pedal issue.

There are four main components that can cause a stiff throttle pedal assembly that include the throttle return springs, throttle cable, carburetor / throttle body linkage, and the throttle pedal itself.
