Battery Terminals
Battery terminals connect your battery to the cables that feed your starter, charging system, and electronics. This category covers top-post (SAE) and side-post terminals, stud and ring terminals, cable ends, and complete terminal kits from trusted brands. You'll find the right material, size, and post style to build a new cable or repair a corroded connection.

Types of Battery Terminals
Battery terminals come in a few standard styles, and the right one depends on your battery's post design and how you route your cables.
These are the main terminal types you'll find in this category:
- Top-post (SAE) terminals clamp onto the tapered round posts on the top of most automotive batteries.
- Side-post terminals bolt into the threaded ports on the side of GM-style batteries.
- Stud and junction terminals give you a threaded post for attaching multiple ring-terminal leads in one place.
- Ring and lug terminals crimp or solder onto a cable end and bolt down to a stud.
- Quick-disconnect terminals let you separate the cable fast for charging, storage, or theft deterrence.
Match the terminal to your post type first, then to your cable gauge. If you're adding a kill switch to the setup, pair the right terminals with our battery disconnect switches. For help tracing a circuit before you wire anything, read our guide on how to read automotive wiring diagrams.
Battery Terminal Materials: Brass, Lead, and Copper
Pick your terminal material based on conductivity, corrosion resistance, and how much current your system pulls.
Brass terminals resist corrosion well and hold up in daily-driven vehicles, which makes them a common choice for replacement top-post and side-post connections. They're easy to service and reasonably priced.
Lead and lead-alloy terminals are soft and easy to form around a post, and they're the traditional material on many factory-style clamps. They seal tightly but can deform if you over-tighten the bolt.
Copper and tin-plated copper terminals offer the highest conductivity, so they're the pick for high-output charging systems, big stereo installs, and racing setups that draw heavy current.
For most street cars, brass strikes the best balance of price and durability. Step up to copper when you upgrade to larger car batteries or add accessories that demand more amperage.
Battery Terminal Kits and Cable Ends
Battery terminal kits and cable ends let you build a new cable or repair a damaged one without replacing the whole harness.
A kit usually bundles the terminal ends, studs, and hardware you need to finish a connection, so you're not sourcing parts piece by piece. That saves time when you're making custom-length leads.
Look for the wire gauge that matches your cable, commonly 6-gauge for accessory runs and 2-gauge for starter and ground leads. Stud sizes matter too, with 1/4 in., 5/16 in., and 3/8 in. posts showing up most often on ring-terminal kits.
If you'd rather buy finished leads than build your own, shop our battery cables for pre-made options. Moroso and other brands offer terminal kits sized for common builds, so match the gauge and stud size to your existing setup before you order.
Top Brands for Battery Terminals
Several trusted brands supply battery terminals and electrical parts through JEGS, and each brings its own strengths to your build.
NOCO makes battery connectors, terminal protectors, and charging gear built for corrosion resistance and clean, reliable installs.
Dorman Products offers a wide range of replacement terminals, cable ends, and repair parts that match factory specifications for daily-driven vehicles.
Allstar Performance focuses on racing and shop-grade electrical components, including terminals, studs, and disconnect hardware for competition builds.
Moroso supplies terminals, cables, and battery hardware engineered for performance and motorsports applications where a solid connection counts.
Compare each brand's terminals against your material, post-type, and size needs before you decide. For deeper background on wiring and maintenance, browse our battery tech articles and guides before you buy.
How to Prevent Battery Terminal Corrosion
Battery terminal corrosion happens when acid vapor and moisture react with the metal, leaving a powdery buildup that blocks current flow.
You'll usually spot it as a white, blue, or green crust around the terminal, and it can cause hard starts, dim lights, and charging problems. Left alone, it eats into the connection and raises resistance.
To prevent it, clean the posts, tighten every connection, and add protection. Terminal protectors and felt washers keep acid vapor from settling on the metal, and a coat of dielectric grease seals out moisture. Tight, clean connections also cut resistance and the heat that comes with it.
Stock up on terminal protectors and related battery accessories to keep your connections clean between services. Browse the terminals, kits, and protection above, match them to your post type and cable gauge, and add what your build needs to your cart today.

Frequently Asked Questions About Battery Terminals
Which battery terminal should you disconnect first?
Disconnect the negative terminal first, which is the black one marked with a minus sign. Removing the ground first prevents your wrench from causing a short if it touches the vehicle's body while you loosen the connection. When you reconnect, do the reverse and attach the positive terminal first.
What size battery terminal do you need?
Match the terminal to your battery's post type, then to your cable's wire gauge. Top-post terminals fit tapered SAE posts, while side-post terminals use the threaded ports on the battery's side. For ring-terminal and stud connections, confirm the stud size, such as 1/4 in., 5/16 in., or 3/8 in., before you order.
Can you replace a battery terminal without replacing the battery?
Yes. If the battery posts are intact and the battery still holds a charge, you can replace just the terminal or cable end. Clean the post, install the new terminal, and tighten it down for a solid connection. Replace the battery only if the posts are damaged or it no longer holds a charge.
Are top post and side post terminals interchangeable?
No. Top-post and side-post terminals match different battery post styles, so they aren't directly interchangeable. Some adapters let you convert between the two, but the cleanest fix is choosing the terminal that matches your battery. Check your battery's post design before you buy.
