The breather hose is the fresh air side of crankcase ventilation, letting filtered air into the crankcase so the PCV valve has something to draw through. When it splits, unmetered air enters downstream of the air filter, which leans out the mixture and lets dirt in at the same time. Rubber this old is usually hard enough to crack in your hand.
