A race car or high-tech look can be achieved by adding a hose heat shield and gas or diesel fuel line insulation under the hood. This can be desired for certain themes or styles in the engine bay that will turn heads at car shows and meets.

Many people wrap fuel lines to prevent vapor lock in carbureted applications as well as to keep fuel cool in order to increase horsepower. There are multiple ways to keep fuel lines cool in automotive applications. The first way is to route the fuel line away from engine heat as much as possible. Running the line through the frame into the engine compartment will help keep lines from heat and lower fuel temperature. Converting a mechanical fuel pump to an electric version can improve cooling since the pump would be at the back of the vehicle where it is cooler. In some cases, heat is unavoidable. To help insulate fuel lines from heat there are a few different products. The first product is heat tape. This is wrapped around the fuel line and fuses to itself with adhesive backing. The material in the tape acts as a "mirror" to deflect and prevent heat from being absorbed behind it, into the fuel line. The second most common type is heat sleeving or tubing. This type of protection requires you to slide the hose through it. It provides 360 degrees of even protection with a clean look. The third type of protection is heat wrap. This design is like a thermal sleeve but is split so that it can wrap around the hose without having to slide over it. A creative design to keep fuel lines cool is with a fuel cool can. A fuel cooler chills the fuel with ice that is filled up around the cool tube or a small gas reservoir within the can. In order for these to work properly, ice needs to be kept full in the can.

Flexible or rubber hose can be insulated by sliding it through heat sleeving or tubing or it can be covered with heat wrap or tape. The most common sizes are 3/4 pipe insulation and 3/8 fuel line insulation. When purchasing, confirm the outside diameter of your hose for proper fitment. When using heat sleeve, tubing, or fuel line wrap, determine the length needed and cut it before sliding it over the hose. For fuel line insulation tape, cut the tape once wrapping is complete. The tape has adhesive on one side to keep it from unravelling.

Gas line can be wrapped with heat wrap, which is simple to install using hook and loop tape to secure it to the hose and cut with standard scissors. If desired, heat tape can be used to wrap a fuel line. It has self-adhesive on one side to stick to itself as it is wrapped around the hose and can be cut with scissors.
