As part of that milestone, NHRA is unveiling its list of the Top 75 Drivers from its first 75 years, a roll call of legends whose achievements have defined and elevated the sport.

The Top 75 Drivers list builds on a foundation established during NHRA’s 50th anniversary season in 2001. At that time, a panel of experts selected the Top 50 Drivers from NHRA’s early history, pioneers, record-setters, and champions whose names became synonymous with drag racing greatness. Icons such as Don Garlits, Don Prudhomme, John Force, Shirley Muldowney, Bob Glidden, and Kenny Bernstein formed the cornerstone of that original list.
As NHRA approached its 75th anniversary, the organization recognized that the last 25 years produced a new era of standout talent. From 2000 to 2025, the sport evolved significantly, leading NHRA to convene another panel of experts to evaluate modern-era drivers based on championships, records, competitive impact, and influence on the sport.

Coughlin is six-time NHRA World Champion, a former NHRA Rookie of the Year, and the first driver in NHRA history to win national events in seven different racing categories. Over the course of his career, he has earned 88 national event victories, including four wins at the U.S. Nationals, placing him among the most accomplished drivers in the sport’s history.
