Mark Livarchuk’s LS-Swapped E30 M3 Takes 1st Place in the Non-Domestic Class at LS Fest East

When it comes to passion projects, few builds tell a story quite like Mark Livarchuk’s 1987 BMW E30 M3. JEGS is proud to work with Mark and even prouder to see him take home 1st Place in the Non Domestic Class with his LS-swapped BMW E30 M3 at LS Fest East.

A Dream Car Years in the Making

Mark’s love for the E30 M3 started back in 2011. When his brother was searching Copart for a $2,000 car, they stumbled across an M3 that ended up selling for $7,000. It was far beyond their budget, but just enough to spark Mark’s dream. As he dug deeper, he learned the significance of the E30 M3 and became determined to own one someday.

Developed directly from motorsport, the BMW E30 M3 debuted at the 1985 Frankfurt Motor Show and quickly became a sensation. It went on to secure numerous championship victories and cemented its place as one of the most iconic vehicles in BMW’s M lineup. Produced from 1982 to 1994, the E30 generation of the 3 Series included a variety of body styles, but it was the M3 that became a legend.

Mark's dream took nearly a decade to materialize. Mark first began building a replica in 2020 with an S2000 engine, but fate intervened when he found a genuine M3 shell for sale. With only about 5,000 E30 M3s ever imported into the U.S., the opportunity was rare. Even better, the seller happened to want an S2000, which Mark owned. A trade was made, and Mark finally had the foundation for his dream car.

Built From the Ground Up

Growing up in his father’s body shop, Mark spent school breaks and weekends learning the ins and outs of collision repair. Those skills paid off when it came time to tackle his own project. The M3 was stripped down to bare metal and repainted with Sikkens top-of-the-line paint products. Every detail was touched: new brake lines, a big brake kit, and a custom set of 3-piece forged Fikse wheels.

Under the hood, Mark went all in. The E30 is powered by a fully built LS1, has a T56 Tremec transmission with a Sikky LS swap kit paired with a Holley Terminator standalone system with a 6-inch dash. To complete the swap, Mark relied on several JEGS components, including a universal wiring harness, fan relay kit, heater core, and a 3-inch true dual exhaust kit with JEGS mufflers.

The “Controversial” LS Swap Decision

Among enthusiasts, the BMW E30 M3 is often considered sacred, a car celebrated for its four-cylinder engine and motorsport pedigree. That’s why LS-swapping one can be seen as controversial, sparking debates between purists and builders.

Mark's situation is actually pretty common in the E30 M3 community, and here's why. The original S14 4-cylinder engine in the E30 M3 is legendary. But here's the painful reality: a used S14 engine in decent condition will run you anywhere from $8,000 to $15,000 or more, while a full professional rebuild can easily cost $10,000 to $20,000. The problem gets worse because many parts are simply no longer available from BMW, and the specialist labor required to work on these complex engines isn't cheap either. The S14 commands these prices because it's rare, mechanically sophisticated, and highly sought after by enthusiasts.

This is exactly why the LS swap makes so much sense for Mark's situation. An LS engine like an LS1 or LS3 with a transmission costs between $3,000 and $8,000, and adding a swap kit with all necessary parts runs another $3,000 to $5,000. That's often half the cost of rebuilding or replacing the original S14. Beyond the financial advantage, Mark gains serious performance benefits: the LS delivers 350 to 500+ horsepower compared to the S14's 192, with far more torque and a much more effortless power delivery. These engines are incredibly reliable thanks to modern GM engineering, and the aftermarket support is massive with cheap, readily available parts everywhere.

The LS swap particularly makes sense in scenarios like Mark's where the original motor has already blown up. It's perfect for someone who wants a fun driver rather than a museum piece, or who prefers reliable torque over high-strung originality.

The tradeoff is real though: Mark loses the soul and collectability of an original S14 car, purists will criticize the choice, and resale value to collectors may take a hit. But what he gains is a practical, powerful, and affordable driver that he can actually use without constant anxiety about breaking something expensive. For someone who wants to genuinely drive their E30 M3 hard without breaking the bank, the LS swap is completely logical. It ultimately comes down to a philosophical choice: preserve automotive history at great expense, or create a reliable performance machine you can enjoy without worry.

To some, it’s unthinkable to replace the legendary S14 engine; to others, it’s a way to push performance further and bring new life to a chassis that was built to be driven hard. Mark’s build blends European heritage with American muscle.

Recognition at LS Fest East

After years of late nights and weekends building the car from the ground up, Mark’s LS-swapped BMW E30 M3 stood out among the competition at LS Fest East where he earned him 1st Place in the Non-Domestic class. It’s a milestone moment for a builder who has poured heart, soul, and countless hours into his project.

Mark’s story is one of persistence and passion. His E30 M3 is a testament to what’s possible when determination meets craftsmanship. And at JEGS, we’re proud to be part of his journey.
