As safety standards evolve in motorsports, the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) has announced an important rule change set to take effect July 1, 2025. The update impacts two key racing classes: Top Sportsman and Top Dragster, where increasing speeds and decreasing ETs demand stricter driver safety measures.
What’s Changing in 2025?
Beginning July 1, 2025, all drivers in the following classes will be required to use a 6-point driver restraint system that meets SFI Spec 16.1 or 16.5:
- Top Sportsman (TS): 6.10 to 7.99 ET in the 1/4 mile
- Top Dragster (TD): 6.10 to 7.70 ET in the 1/4 mile
This marks a shift away from 5-point harnesses, aligning Top Sportsman and Top Dragster classes with the safety standards already in place for other NHRA and Pro Mod categories.

Rule Details From Simpson Race Products
According to Simpson Race Products and NHRA rulebook excerpts, the upcoming rule clarifies the following for each class:
Section 7A: Top Sportsman, Driver Restraint System
A minimum six-point driver restraint system meeting SFI Spec 16.1 or 16.5 is mandatory. Restraint systems must be updated at two-year intervals from date of manufacture.
Section 7B: Top Dragster, Driver Restraint System
A minimum six-point driver restraint system meeting SFI Spec 16.1 or 16.5 is mandatory. All belts used in open-bodied front-engine supercharged methanol-burning vehicles must be covered with a fire-resistant covering. Restraint systems must be updated at two-year intervals from date of manufacture.
These updates ensure consistent safety requirements across fast-moving NHRA classes, offering greater protection to drivers as ETs continue to drop.
