    Can I remove pin, remove axles, take out existing differential, move ring gear over to new posi differential and install? I would like to leave pinion gear in. Would also check carrier bearings.

      Mark, yes, that can absolutely be done as long as the existing ring and pinion gears are staying together as a matched set. You can remove the axles, pull the carrier assembly out, transfer the ring gear onto the new posi unit, and reinstall everything while leaving the pinion gear in place.
      That said, there are a few important things to watch closely. Even though you are not changing the pinion, the backlash and carrier bearing preload still need to be checked when the new differential goes in. Small differences in carrier machining or bearing thickness can change the setup enough that it needs adjustment with shims.
      You’re also thinking correctly about replacing the carrier bearings while you’re in there. That’s smart preventative maintenance, especially if the rear end already has some age on it.
      One thing I would strongly recommend is marking and keeping the bearing caps in their original positions and orientations. Mixing them up can create problems quickly.
      You’ll also want to inspect:
      * Ring gear condition and tooth wear pattern
      * Axle bearings and seals
      * Carrier shims
      * Cross pin and spider gear wear if applicable
      If the backlash and pattern check out after installation, you may not need to disturb the pinion setup at all. But you still need to verify it with a dial indicator and gear marking compound instead of assuming it stayed correct.
