Depending on the application, the steps to replace a flexplate can vary. In most rear-wheel drive applications, the first step is to separate the transmission from the engine. This requires disconnecting the driveshaft, transmission crossmember-to-frame bolts, shift linkage, speedometer cable, wiring harnesses, fluid cooler lines, and anything else that would prevent separation. The torque converter bolts can then be removed from the flexplate after the dust cover is removed from the bottom of the transmission. This job can be made much easier with the help of a transmission tool for flexplates. Next, the bellhousing bolts are unbolted from the transmission to unbolt it from the engine. Once the bellhousing is free of the engine, confirm everything else is removed that would prevent the transmission from sliding back. Then support the transmission from tipping at the front while the crossmember helps support the rear and slide the transmission back far enough to gain access to the flexplate-to-crankshaft bolts. Remove the flexplate-to-crankshaft bolts and carefully remove the flexplate. At this time, inspect the rear main seal on the engine for leaks and replace if necessary. Installation of the replacement flexplate is the reverse of removal, with care used to make sure bolts line up properly.
