Hi,
I bought a quick star 275 for my hot rod back in 2012 and even though it’s very noisy I’ve had nothing but problems with the rubber seal going 5 times now. This pump is not reliable as you state and always nervous if i take it for a drive in case it leaks again.
Surely there must be a better seal out there that will prevent this ongoing problem.
The problem i have now is i cant change out to a different pump as its a show car and the braided lines have been made to suit this pump only.
Im stuck and frustrated.
What to do?-
Karl, I can understand the frustration here, especially on a finished show car where everything is already plumbed and you just want it to be dependable. You are not wrong that the QuickStar 275 is a loud pump and it can be unforgiving if everything around it is not exactly right. One important thing to clear up is that this pump absolutely has to be run with a proper bypass style regulator and a return system. If it is ever run dead headed or sees excessive pressure, the internal seals will fail, and that is one of the most common reasons people see repeat seal issues. Another big factor is inlet restriction. The QuickStar wants a large, free flowing feed with the pump mounted low and gravity fed, along with a coarse pre filter before the pump and a finer filter after it. Any restriction on the inlet side can cause cavitation, heat, and seal damage over time. Fuel type also matters. Modern pump fuel with ethanol is much harder on older rubber compounds. MagnaFuel does offer updated rebuild components that use modern ethanol resistant materials like Viton, and those are far more durable than what was available back in 2012. If the pump has been rebuilt multiple times with older seal materials, that alone could explain why the problem keeps coming back. Since you are locked into the existing braided lines, the best path forward is usually to rebuild the pump with the latest seal materials directly from MagnaFuel, verify it is mounted on proper isolators, confirm voltage is stable, and double check that the regulator is truly bypassing fuel back to the tank and not allowing pressure spikes. In many cases, once those details are corrected, the pump becomes much more reliable even if it remains louder than newer designs.
