Hi, I have a 1985 S10 pickup with a 2003 5.3 engine. I installed a set of Flowmaster H-P2 mufflers with the exhaust aiming slight back exiting out the side in front of the rear tires and drove it 400 miles. It sounded good and there was moderate exhaust drone. and lot of fumes. Winter came and I put my truck away and did some mods over the Winter (installed a Texas Speed Shop truck cam). When the weather broke I drove in and the drone increased a lot and the fumes were unbearable. I researched the Net and the Flowmasters catalog and settled for the series 50, 3 chamber mufflers. I installed them and drove my truck. The drone was worst than ever and the fumes were the worst. The Series 50 mufflers were supposed have little or no drone. I called the Flowmaster techline, they asked me if I had a H pipe ( I do) and suggested to try a 3″ exhaust from the mufflers out the back. First I have no room and second I’m not going to buy any TRY more mufflers without a guarantee. I already spent a lot of money. The truck is really small and there is no room for a J-pipe. I have ladder bars and big tires and tailpipes going out the rear is a big challenge. Right now I’m trying to run the tailpipes out the rear with oval tips. I don’t know of a muffler shop in my city that I can trust to do it right at a reasonable price. The truck is not driveable for more than 30 minutes. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
Hi Bud, thanks for taking the time to share all the details about your setup. It sounds like you’ve put a lot of effort into the build and you’re running into two tough challenges: drone and exhaust fumes.
Let’s start with the drone issue. Even though Flowmaster Series 50 mufflers are known for being quieter and more refined than most, cam swaps like the one you’ve done can shift exhaust pulses in ways that amplify drone, especially in tight chassis like an S10 with limited room for tailpipes. A cam with more overlap (common with performance truck cams) will increase reversion and overall exhaust energy at cruising RPM, making drone worse in cab-forward vehicles like yours.
The placement and length of the exhaust pipes also matters more than you might expect. Dumping the exhaust near the cab, even at the rear of the doors, can amplify sound resonance and make drone and fumes unbearable. Unfortunately, the only consistent way to reduce both drone and fumes is to get the exhaust out the rear of the vehicle.
It sounds like you’re already working toward running tailpipes out the back, even if it’s tight. Even a short tailpipe section behind the mufflers can help a lot. As for muffler selection, if you continue to have trouble, you might consider something like a DynoMax Super Turbo, which tends to have very low drone and is fairly compact. It’s not as aggressive sounding as the Flowmaster line, but it’s very livable for daily driving.
On the fumes, this could be partly due to the cam (more overlap = more raw fuel at idle), but having short exhaust dumps near the cab is definitely contributing. Routing the exhaust farther back is your best bet. Make sure your seals on the firewall and around the cab are tight, too, any gaps will pull in fumes due to pressure differentials at speed.
It’s frustrating to throw money at parts and not get results, so we understand not wanting to “try” another muffler blindly. If you can get those tailpipes out the rear, it might solve most of the issues without needing to change anything else.
