    building a DZ 302 with 186 heads 2.02 and 1.600 valves. 11.1 compression pistons. i am going to add holley efi and hyperspark ign. Do I continue with r43s plugs or is there a better alternative to use with the upgraded fuel and spark delivery?

      Jeff,
      With that DZ 302 combo and 11.1 compression, you are already right on the edge of what the original R43 style plugs were intended for. Those plugs worked well in the day with carburetors and conventional ignition, but once you step into EFI and a capacitive discharge style ignition like the Holley Sniper with Hyperspark, the needs change a bit. The stronger and more consistent spark means you generally want a slightly colder plug to help control heat and reduce the risk of detonation, especially with that compression ratio. Many builders move to a colder performance plug from brands like NGK or Autolite when making this upgrade. A projected tip is usually avoided on high compression small block Chevy builds, so sticking with a non projected style is a smart move. Copper plugs are still preferred for this type of engine since they shed heat well and give clear tuning feedback, even if they do not last as long as platinum or iridium. Plug gap also matters more with EFI and Hyperspark, and it is common to run a slightly tighter gap than a stock street engine to keep spark energy focused and stable at higher rpm. Exact heat range and gap can vary based on camshaft, fuel quality, and how hard the engine will be run, so final tuning is important once it is up and running.
