OEM and high-performance radiators are square or rectangular shaped and, in general, are "thin" components designed to cool the engine by releasing heat through convection from the antifreeze/coolant that passes through them. Inside the radiator core (between the tanks) are rows of tubes that hot coolant travels through. These can vary in size and number, such as single, double or triple in width. The tubes connect to fins, which help transfer the heat into the air either with the help of the vehicle moving and air rushing through the grille and radiator or through fans.

For a long time, car and truck radiators were made from copper and brass, often with a black coating to prevent corrosion. In more recent times, OEM radiators switched to aluminum and aluminum cores/plastic tank construction, which tend to leak if pushed too hard. Now, nearly all aftermarket radiators are entirely manufactured from aluminum.

The first option in cleaning auto radiators (Ford, Mopar and Chevy radiators, for example) is to use a product such as Evapo-Rust Thermocure. This product is utilized without removing any parts and by pouring it into the radiator, adding water, circulating the mixture by running the engine, letting it sit inside, flushing everything out with fresh water, and then refilling with the correct antifreeze mixture. Another option is to remove the radiator and take it to a car radiator repair shop to have the radiator hot-tanked, which will remove all of the corrosion and build-up. The shop can also pressure-test the radiator and repair any leaks if found. This option usually is more affordable than a replacement car radiator price. If it is discovered that the radiator cannot be adequately cleaned or repaired, a new radiator will need to be purchased.
