Have you got a classic car, or are you building a hot rod? Are you sick and tired of carburetors? We don’t blame you; these deceptively simple devices that mix air and fuel together can get quite finicky. You’ve got to have everything just right, and something as simple as changing environmental conditions can throw everything off balance. For example, if you live in the mountains where the air is cool but thinner, you’ll face issues if you drive down into the hot desert with denser air.
Many classic car owners prefer EFI, or Electronic Fuel Injection. EFI systems eliminate all the guesswork and tuning. They automate these tasks by using a computer or Engine Control Unit (ECU) to precisely meter out the right amount of fuel, ensuring the perfect mix.
Holley, well-known for their line-up of excellent carburetors, also has a fine range of EFI systems. They have recognized that not everyone wants carbs, after all. So, you can retrofit a Holley EFI system to many popular classic V8 engines, for example, and enjoy a hassle-free drive. You can drive from coast to coast, encountering various altitude and temperature conditions along the way, and the EFI system will handle it all without a complaint.
We mentioned the ECU. This little computer box is the brains of the entire operation. The ECU collects data, analyzes it, and sends out control signals. It uses an array of maps or data tables to determine the optimal settings for your engine to operate powerfully and smoothly. Naturally, there are multiple choices of ECU to pick from. Here, we will compare the Holley Dominator with the Holley Terminator. These two popular offerings sit above Holley’s most popular Sniper ECU. As a result, they offer a bit more customization and tunability. Ready? Let’s dive in.
The Holley Terminator is designed to be a price-competitive offering. Hence, due to a less complex design, it can only manage high-impedance injectors. It can handle fewer inputs and outputs than the Dominator. Its total count is four inputs and four outputs. What are these?
Sensor data, such as the fuel air mixture, manifold absolute pressure (MAP) or airflow (MAF), coolant temperature, intake manifold air temperature, throttle position, crankshaft position, camshaft position, and more, are inputs. These data points help the system determine optimal settings and operate accordingly.
Outputs are how the system communicates its decisions to the car. These include controlling the injectors and items such as radiator fans, fuel pump, ignition coils, idle air control valve, and others. The Terminator also offers some electronic boost control functions for turbocharged or supercharged engines. Furthermore, the Terminator comes with its own built-in MAP sensor. This makes things simpler by negating the need for the user to install and configure a separate MAP sensor.
In contrast, the Holley Dominator is the top dog in Holley’s hierarchy. It can control 12 peaks and hold injectors or up to 24 low and high-impedance injectors. This means you could use it to control up to a 12-cylinder engine. Plus, the Dominator has far more inputs and outputs than the Terminator. Holley says the Dominator can handle 36 inputs and 36 outputs. This makes it incredible for tuners who want maximum control and analysis.
The Dominator includes drive-by-wire throttle functionality and can control some electronically controlled transmissions. It also offers boost control functions and the ability to manage Nitrous systems. However, it needs a separate MAF sensor to be installed and configured. This is due to its advanced nature, where the user can choose their MAF accordingly.

The Terminator is designed to be as seamless as possible. It comes in kit form with its own wiring harness that can connect to various Holley EFI systems. Furthermore, the Terminator kit includes a separate hand-held device with a touchscreen. The device uses an easy-to-understand graphical user interface, negating the need for the user to plug in a laptop and use special software to perform tuning and analysis. However, the Terminator also offers laptop connectivity. When this is used, more tuning parameters are available.
In contrast, the Dominator requires a laptop for tuning but has incredible scope as a result. It also supports advanced Individual Configuration File (ICF) capabilities, which allow you to tune parameters such as spark timing, boost, fuel, nitrous, and more.
So, which one is best? Well, we’ve merely scratched the surface here. We’d need many more pages to properly list out the differences and specifications of the Terminator and the Dominator. So, let’s summarize as far as possible.
The Terminator is excellent for those who are starting out on their EFI journey but have some knowledge and desire to tune. Despite its relatively limited input and output count, the included hand-held tuning device is fantastic for adjusting settings on the go. You can easily keep this in your glove box. The Terminator will also offer a noticeable performance increase, making it great for street applications.
In contrast, you can't go amiss with the Dominator if you’re a severe tuner who plans to race your car. The top choice in Holley’s range is that you can gradually explore its features, tweaking and experimenting as you go along. However, do your research and adjust the settings progressively, lest you blow something up. There are no safeguards here other than your own knowledge and common sense.
