Since 1980, the Dodge RAM 1500 has been well-known as one of the best full-size pickup trucks. It is now known as the RAM 1500 on the fifth generation since the RAM moniker was spun off as a separate brand in 2010.

If you’ve got one of these big guys, you know how great it already is. Did you know you can make it even better with a few upgrades? Let us take you through the possibilities with options from JEGS.

Getting Max Horsepower Out of Your Dodge RAM 1500

How can you get the maximum horsepower from your Dodge RAM 1500 or RAM 1500? Well, there are many ways. Not all may apply to your specific model, so if you’re unsure where to start, give us a ring, and we’ll gladly help you.

Some of the areas you can consider include:

Next, let us tell you about the different generations of Dodge RAM 1500, and we’ll also suggest an appropriate mod for each one to get you started on your performance journey.

First Generation: 1981 – 1993

The first generation appeared for the 1981 model year and marked the introduction of the RAM brand. Available in two- or four-door cab styles, these workmanlike trucks were propelled by gasoline in-line sixes or V8s of up to 360ci. A Cummins diesel six joined the stable in 1989. Buyers could specify options such as air conditioning, power windows, and a radio cassette player. Some variants also offered four-wheel-drive systems and automatic transmissions.

An electrical system upgrade, such as a new alternator or wiring harness, would be a great upgrade. Trucks of this vintage often suffer deterioration of many components, and the electrical system is one of the prime suspects if you’re having intermittent starting or poor performance. You might also want to check the engine’s grounding wires, which can fail over time.

Second Generation: 1994 – 2001

The second generation featured new, ground-breaking styling at the time, at least for a pickup truck. Three cab styles continued to be offered, and they gained more space plus in-cab storage options. Meanwhile, a new Magnum V10 joined the range, displacing 488ci. Not to be confused with the engine in the Dodge Viper, this engine was tuned for torque rather than outright power. In 1998, the design underwent a facelift that saw the OBD-II protocol made standard across all trucks, plus some refreshed styling on the inside and out.

Why not engage in a cooling system upgrade for this generation? The oldest trucks of this vintage will be over thirty years old now. Their radiators, hoses, and water pumps will be old and tired. A cooling system upgrade will help your engine run more efficiently and improve its longevity.

Third Generation: 2002 – 2008

The third generation brought about many notable changes. Four-wheel-drive variants now received independent front suspension rather than beam axles. Inside, buyers could pick an in-dash navigation system, too. However, the most notable factor was the introduction of the SRT-10 in 2004. This did see the formidable Viper engine and drivetrain placed in a Dodge RAM, creating a mega-truck in terms of performance. It featured 22-inch rims, Pirelli tires, and was the world’s fastest pickup truck when it debuted, with a top speed of nearly 155mph.

For this generation, we’d recommend some upgrades to the intake side. Specifically, the air intake. You can start with an aftermarket air filter that will help unlock a few extra horses. Aftermarket air filters have several advantages. They are engineered to provide better airflow without compromising air cleaning abilities. Additionally, many of these are reusable, which means you can simply clean and reuse them when they get dirty.

Going a step further, you can install an aftermarket air intake system, such as a cold or shorter intake. Typically, your factory intake is developed to provide a compromise between performance, fuel efficiency, packaging, and noise reduction. Aftermarket intakes can give you a noticeable boost in drivability, plus some incredible induction noise. Now, who doesn’t like that?

Fourth Generation: 2009 – 2018

The fourth generation debuted in 2009, and just one year later, dropped the Dodge name in favor of RAM becoming a separate Chrysler brand. There was no SRT-10 variant, but the potent 5.7 HEMI V8 with up to 395hp was now available. Meanwhile, the rear suspension was now a coil spring five-link set-up for better ride quality. The range of Ram trucks received yearly updates, and some variants continued to be sold alongside the fifth generation.

If you’re wondering how to get more ponies from that formidable HEMI V8, consider an aftermarket performance programmer or tuner. These plug into the OBD-II port and can give your HEMI extra power and torque without any other modifications to your engine’s physical systems. Hence, many users prefer these easy-to-use products as the starting point for their performance modification pathway.

Fifth Generation: 2019 – Present

The fifth-generation sports styling is in line with RAM’s latest corporate design language and comes in four-door forms only. It now includes a mild hybrid powertrain alongside regular gasoline and diesel offerings. Some trims offer extensive technological, safety features, and luxury trimmings such as leather seats and wood accents. Hence, the RAM 1500 is now a worthy family vehicle as well as a capable load-lugger.

For the fifth generation, why not consider an aftermarket exhaust system? This will help your engine exhale more efficiently and improve its performance. Some systems may even provide better gas mileage when cruising. You can choose from performance mufflers, cat-back systems, or a new system with tuned headers to best match your specific engine.
