What Are Parts Of An Ignition System?
Automotive ignition parts help to provide spark inside the combustion chamber of an engine. The ignition coil creates the voltage that will cause the spark plug to produce the igniting spark by sending it directly to the spark plug on late-model vehicles or to the distributor cap on older vehicles.

The truck and car ignition system provides spark to the combustion chamber inside the engine. The spark created ignites the fuel and air mixture from the fuel and intake system. The resulting explosions push down on the pistons and turn the crankshaft, making the engine run. The ignition coil creates the voltage that causes the spark plug to produce the igniting spark. It does this by sending 40,000-60,000 volts to the distributor cap (on older vehicles). It then jumps from the center of the distributor cap (from the coil wire), to the rotor button inside the distributor cap. The rotor spins via the distributor shaft that is rotated by the camshaft drive gear. The voltage then jumps from the tip of the rotor to the closest spark plug wire terminal on the inside of the distributor cap. Finally, the spark travels from the outside of the distributor cap terminals to the spark plug wires where it continues to the spark plug. On many late model vehicles, the distributor is eliminated and replaced with individual ignition coils that are mounted directly over each spark plug. This reduces components and shortens the distance the voltage has to travel between the ignition coil and spark plug circuit. The timing of when the coil produces voltage is managed by an ignition control module that is either internal or external to the distributor. The ignition control module tells the coil to fire at the exact moment it is needed for perfect engine timing. Input sensors such as a reluctor / pickup or camshaft / crankshaft sensors provide the ignition module with information needed to tell the coil when to correctly fire.
