Transmission Blankets

A transmission blanket is used for protecting the driver from debris caused by catastrophic failure and scattered parts flying outwards from the transmission towards the floor of the vehicle. A drag racer must run a transmission blanket in classes where it is required, often with a SFI rating. Transmission blankets can be universal to fit any transmission (for example, Mopar 48RE transmissions). They can also be custom, designed for a specific transmission such as a GM/Chevy Powerglide. Transmission blankets are most commonly made of nylon or Kevlar material.

Depending on the brand and design, the installation of a transmission blanket will vary. However, most involve either bolting directly to the bellhousing by using the bellhousing-to-engine mounting bolts or straps with adjusters to secure the blanket to the transmission case. The primary area the blanket covers is the top of the transmission to create a barrier between the transmission and driver. Once the transmission blanket is installed, double-check that all bolts and straps are tight.
