Using the proper winch as well as tow straps allows easier unloading and loading of vehicles in your trailer. Winches should be rated at least 1.5 times the vehicle weight for safe pulling. With tow straps, having a higher rating than necessary is always a good insurance policy to keep your vehicle and trailer safe.

The general guideline is to select a car trailer winch with an advertised capacity of 1.5 times the vehicle weight. For example, a 4,500 lb. winch would safely pull a 3,000 lb. vehicle on a trailer. Race cars can be secured to trailers using mounting rings and tie downs. Confirm that you have the correct load rated tie downs, mounting rings, and ratchet straps to ensure they will not break during trips. On non-dragsters, It is always recommended to tie down all four corners of your vehicle with the straps crisscrossed. Where you route the straps is very important as well. Since the suspension and chassis can move independently in a trailer, it is recommended to tie both the rear end and the rear chassis (as well as the front chassis), to help control bounce and wear and tear on shocks during travel on rough roads. For dragsters, a strap over the front chassis and strapping both rear tires as well as a strap over the rear end is highly recommended. Adding a padded block of wood or an air bag under the seat will also help keep the dragster chassis from flexing and bouncing on the suspension. In all cases, it is good practice to check the inside of your trailer every hour or two of travel and make adjustments to keep your trailer and race vehicle safe.
