Anyone who’s ever done quarter mile runs at the dragstrip knows that your reaction time is crucial when you’re getting out of the hole and starting down the track. The iconic drag racing “Christmas tree” has been a fixture at every dragstrip since the early 60s when it was introduced by innovator Leo “Pat” Purcell.
The routine is the same: the “staging” sequence with the first set of small amber lights at the top of the tree is when the cars move up until they break an infrared beam at the starting line. After that, another set of amber lights are illuminated to indicate the cars are pre-staged. Next, three amber lights flash consecutively for a countdown, followed by the green lights that indicate the start of the race.
