Crankshafts are typically made from either cast iron or forged steel, with forged steel being stronger and costing more.

The most common and economical type of camshaft in big block Chevy 454 engines, this version does not require frequent valve lash adjustments compared to a solid design. However, it doesn't produce as much horsepower as the solid or roller camshaft options. Also, with this type of camshaft not using roller lifters, the oil used in this engine requires zinc phosphate to be included or added with the oil to prevent rapid camshaft lobe wear.
The solid or mechanical flat tappet camshaft creates more horsepower than its hydraulic counterpart. However, engines with this camshaft are noisier and also require frequent valve lash adjustments. As with hydraulic flat tappets, this non-roller cam type requires oil with zinc phosphate additive to prevent rapid camshaft lobe wear.
Using roller bearings on the lifters of this type of camshaft, friction is greatly reduced, resulting in improved power and performance. However, the cost for this type of cam is significantly more than a non-roller version. The use of roller lifters does not require zinc phosphate to be included or added with the oil to prevent rapid camshaft lobe wear.
Providing the most horsepower and performance compared to the other types of camshafts, the solid roller cam is often found in drag racing engines. However, it is one of the most expensive designs and also requires frequent valve adjustment. As with the hydraulic roller camshaft, the oil used in this engine does not require zinc phosphate to be included or added with the oil to prevent rapid camshaft lobe wear.
Compression ratio and recommended fuel octane needs to be taken into consideration so that you understand what fuel requirements are necessary at the pump.
At a minimum, a crate engine should be a "long block" assembly, which includes an assembled short block with rotating assembly, and cylinder heads installed. However, manufacturers often add additional components to simplify completing installation such as a harmonic balancer / damper, carburetor, distributor, flexplate, intake manifold, oil filter, spark plugs, water pump, spark plug wires, and more.
