Thread repair is a common challenge faced in many automotive projects, whether it’s due to wear, stripping, or cross-threading. There are various ways to repair damaged threads, such as drilling and tapping for the next size larger, using a Helicoil insert, as well as other options. However, this article focuses on the Time-Sert method, a reliable and durable solution that restores threads to their original size without compromising the integrity of the part.
Time-Sert offers a permanent fix for thread damage, creating new, strong threads in both blind and through holes. This method is preferred in automotive and other mechanical applications due to its precision, strength, and ease of use.
Before starting the repair, inspect the damaged thread and determine the size of the damaged hole. The Time-Sert Thread Repair Kit comes in various sizes, so selecting the correct kit based on your specific thread size is crucial. The kit includes a drill bit, counterbore tool, tap, driver, and thread inserts. Make sure to have lubricant (such as WD-40) for the drilling and tapping process, as well as oil to use between the drive tool and insert. In addition, have towels or other protection from the drilled and tapped material and shards in place around the work area if you don't want them getting into any vital components such as internal engine parts.
To start, use the drill bit provided in the Time-Sert kit to remove the damaged threads. Make sure to drill squarely into the hole and keep the drill aligned with the original thread’s direction. For blind holes (where the hole does not go through), you’ll need to measure the depth carefully and mark your drill to avoid going too deep, such as with a piece of tape.
Tip: Use WD-40 or a similar lubricant while drilling to reduce friction and protect the tools.
The counterbore tool is used next. This tool enlarges the top portion of the hole to create space for the Time-Sert insert's flange. The flange helps lock the insert into place and ensures a secure, permanent repair. When counterboring, apply light pressure and use slow to medium speed to avoid damaging the surrounding material.
Continue until the larger diameter of the counterbore tool contacts the surface completely—this ensures the hole is prepared for the insert.

Once the hole is counterbored, you’ll use the tap from the Time-Sert kit to cut new threads inside the hole. It’s important to hold the tap squarely to the surface of the hole, ensuring the new threads are aligned properly. For blind holes, tap to the same depth as the drilled hole by following the mark you made earlier.
Tip: Use a tap wrench and apply lubricant to keep the tap from binding in the material, especially in deeper holes.
Before inserting the new threads, apply oil to the driver tool. Screw the Time-Sert insert onto the driver and slowly begin threading it into the newly tapped hole. The driver will start to tighten as it expands the bottom few threads of the insert, locking it in place. Continue turning the driver until it passes completely through the insert.
For blind holes, be cautious not to bottom out the driver in the hole. Mark the driver with tape or a marker to ensure you don’t go too deep during installation.
After the insert is installed and the driver has passed through it, the thread repair is complete. Remove the driver, and your repaired threads are ready for use. The Time-Sert method creates a solid, permanent repair, and the new threads will be as strong as (or stronger than) the original.
