One of the greatest things about owning a truck is that you can easily customize it. From performance parts, to aesthetic alterations, to practical additions, there’s no shortage of different ways to personalize your truck, and turn it into a unique dream vehicle.

A common way to personalize your truck is by lifting it. Lifting a truck is pretty much what it sounds like: you lift your truck higher in the air. There are two different types of lifts that you can get for your truck. A body lift merely lifts the body of the truck off of the frame, and holds it higher up. A suspension lift increases the length of your truck’s suspension.

Lifts are popular additions to trucks, and for good reason. They look great, and they can serve an important purpose. But before taking your truck out to get lifted, there are a few things that you should know.

Time

The time involved in installing a lift kit on your truck depends on a few things. First, the type of lift that you’re adding will impact the time of the installation, as suspension lifts usually take longer than body lifts. Second, the type of truck that you own plays a role. As with any automotive repair, maintenance, or addition, some vehicles are easier to work on than others. And third, it depends on the technician doing the installation. A lift specialist is likely to be able to install a lift more quickly than a generic mechanic. Its very important to plan ahead on how to lift your truck to eliminate any problems and surprises during installation.

It’s a good idea to expect a truck lift install to take at least a day. With some simpler lifts and excellent mechanics, a lift can be installed in as little as four hours, or maybe even shorter. However, it’s not at all uncommon for a lift to take two days to finish.

Installing a lift takes a bit longer if you try and do it yourself. You should plan on it taking about twice as much time if you add the lift to your truck at home.

How Much Does It Cost To Lift Your Truck?

You may be asking yourself, "How much does it cost to get your truck lifted?" Just as with the time, the cost of a truck lift install depends on the mechanic, the truck that you have, and whether you’re opting for a body lift or a suspension lift. Because of these factors, the cost of a truck lift can really vary. In general, a body lift kit will cost between $100 and $500, while a suspension lift kit will cost between $1,000 and $5,000. If you opt to have a professional install the kit for you, you’re likely to pay high hundreds for a body kit, or low to mid thousands for a suspension kit.

Vehicle Warranty

It’s important to consider your vehicle’s warranty when adding a lift kit. The safest way to ensure that you don’t void the warranty is by contacting your dealer to ask them about your truck’s specific warranty, or by having the lift installed by the dealership. In general, lift kits void the warranty for all parts that might be impacted by the kit or the installation, but not unaffected parts.

Expect Install Obstacles

It’s fairly common to encounter some obstacles when installing a lift kit in your truck. In most cases, you have to take apart a good portion of the truck’s suspension in order to install the kit, and then you need to put things back together. You never know what’s going to happen when you start taking things off your truck. You might find maintenance projects that need doing, loose parts, or have a hard time getting things to fit back together.

Benefits of Lifting Your Truck

Lifting a truck serves three major purposes. First, in the case of a truck with a suspension lift, it dramatically improves a truck’s ability to offroad. Second, it makes space for larger tires (which can also help with offroading). And third, let’s be honest: lifted trucks just lool cool. And that’s pretty important.
