A capable vehicle needs capable tires. Especially with classic muscle cars, such as the Chevrolet Nova SS, tires are the aspect that makes and breaks handling and performance. If you own the Chevrolet Nova SS, read about tire sizes for this exceptional piece of Chevy’s history, tire recommendations, and our guide on how and when to replace your tires.

How To Size A Chevy Nova Tire

Finding the correct size of tires for your Chevy Nova is straightforward. For sure, the easiest way to identify the tire dimensions is to look at the tires currently mounted on the Chevy. The dimensions should be visible on the tire's sidewall, including the tire's speed rating. If you’re unable to check this, or you’re unsure whether your current tires are sized correctly for your Nova SS - the model came out of the factory with E70-14 tires. Some modern production alternatives to these dimensions would be 215/60R14, 205/70R14, or 195/80R14. Depending on the year, other sizes were available from the factory.

Best Tires For Chevy Nova

Depending on your driving style and typical weather conditions, there are various suitable tire options for your Chevy Nova SS.

If you use your muscle car strictly for sports driving and want the most grip possible, semi-slicks like Mickey Thompson ET Street in alternative size 275/60R15 will be a great option. However, in most cases, drivers will look for a better compromise between handling, performance, and comfort.

Finally, if you want to keep your Nova SS close to OEM and preserve its handling and looks as intended by the factory back in the 1960s and 70s, look into options such as Goodyear Polyglas Custom Wide Tread and Firestone Wide Oval classic radial tires. As outlined above, there are alternatives from modern production, which open up a larger variety of options at the cost of originality. Of course, selection is somewhat restricted due to the not-so-common tire size of the Chevrolet Nova SS, but several good options remain.

When To Replace Your Chevy Nova Tires

You should check the state of your tires and thoroughly inspect them periodically for any wear and tear. This is especially important with vintage vehicles, typically driven only on rare occasions. If that is your case, you should inspect the tires before every drive, including checking the tire pressure.

When critiquing tires, you should first look for any visible damage. Typical cases of tire damage include slashed side walls from hitting curbs or punctures in the treads from sharp stones or nails.

Next, take a close look at the tread. The typical tread depth on new tires is around 11/32” or 8 millimeters. The minimum tread depth stated by the law varies between states but is usually 2/32”. Therefore, replace your Chevrolet Nova SS's tires when they reach this threshold.

However, even if tires meet their legal requirements, they may no longer provide optimal performance. Tread patterns are engineered to enhance braking and disperse water, which cannot be done as effectively with grooves that are too shallow. For this reason, it is recommended that tires be replaced even before reaching the lawful limit. Manufacturers now incorporate wear indicators to simplify checking tires — small raised sections within the tread grooves. When the tread wears level with these indicators, it's a clear sign that the tires should be replaced, as they have worn down to their limit and are beyond their recommended life span.

Lastly, double-check the DOT code on the tires. This four-digit number on the tire sidewall denotes its manufacturing date. The first two digits represent the week, and the last two are the year the tire was manufactured. For example, DOT 3623 indicates that the tire was manufactured in the 36th week of 2023 making it early September. Typically, tires maintain optimal performance for about four years. Beyond this period, the compound hardens up, resulting in reduced grip and compromised safety. Even if not used heavily and stored in proper conditions during the off-season, tires aged six years or older are generally not recommended.

In summary, replace tires when damaged, aged, or worn out. This is particularly crucial for performance vehicles like the Chevrolet Nova SS, which relies on high-quality tires to handle its impressive 295 horsepower.

How To Replace Your Chevy Nova Tires

Most drivers will replace their Chevrolet Nova SS tires with a specialized shop. The advantage of this approach, among others, is the ability to have your wheels rebalanced simultaneously. The use of professional equipment makes tire changes significantly less time-consuming. However, alternatives enable tire changes at home and in DYI conditions. Here's how to proceed.

Begin by removing the old tire. First, you need to deflate it fully. Then, pry the tire bead away from the rim and work your way around until it detaches entirely and can be removed. When mounting the new tire, apply tire mounting lubricant (or soap water) to the bead of the new tire and the rim. Next, position the new tire onto the rim. Use a pry bar or similar tool to lever the tire bead over the wheel rim, working around the entire circumference, starting from the valve stem.

If you've decided to replace your Chevrolet Nova SS tires, visit JEGS. You'll find a diverse selection of UHP, slick, drag, and all-season tires for various vehicles there. Most importantly, JEGS offers classic radial tires, the ideal option for preserving the OEM looks and handling of vintage muscle cars, such as your Chevrolet Nova SS.
