A large amount of oil contamination comes from the cylinder walls during the combustion process, when fuel and air is ignited, leaving an ashy residue that is wiped away by the piston rings and down into the oil. To help keep oil clear of harmful debris, an oil filter is used, trapping a large number of particles. In most cases, this round canister is hand-tightened to the engine and removed with an oil filter wrench during an oil-change.
