Piston Ring
During combustion, spark is created from the ignition system and the fuel and air mixture ignites in the combustion chamber, causing an explosion. With the valves closed, the only parts that are made to move in the combustion chamber are the pistons. The pressure from combustion pushes them down with the connecting rods, rotating the crankshaft, and producing power. To help seal the pistons to the cylinder walls, rings are used. These metal "circles" have a small gap / break on each of them to allow installation over the piston and to help it fit into the piston grooves. Once installed, they provide sealing from combustion at the top of the piston and oil from below the piston. Over time and mileage, piston rings will degrade, requiring replacement.
When choosing a set of replacement rings, first confirm the year, make, model and engine size for your vehicle. If your engine block has been bored and has different pistons installed, confirm the bore size. Then from the remaining compatible options, select the rings that meet your application and budget needs. For custom engine applications, confirm the bore size as well as the ring width. Finally, choose the correct rings that match your horsepower and application (for example drag racing only, super/turbocharged, nitrous, etc.). Don't forget any additional items to complete your project such as a piston ring compressor, gaskets, seals, hardware and any other installation parts or tools.
JEGS offers a large selection of piston rings from top manufacturers including Clevite MAHLE, Sealed Power, Total Seal, , and many more. Each piston ring is built from high-quality materials and assembly to provide long life and the sealing performance your engine needs.
