Since 1968, seat belts have been found in all US vehicles(due to national laws) and have been credited with saving many lives. When used properly, they anchor the driver and passengers to the seat, preventing them from being ejected during a collision as well as thrown against the windshield or dash, which can cause serious injury or worse, a fatality. There are many different designs, which incorporate multiple mounting points. The most basic design, a lap-belt, incorporates 2 mounting points. Late model vehicles incorporate a 3-point seat belt, which adds a shoulder belt for improved safety. Racing applications typically use 5 or 6 point mounting, with two shoulder belts, lap belts, and one or two "sub" belts between the legs, to prevent the driver from sliding forward and out from under the safety harness.

For universal and custom applications determine the number of mounting points you need. This can be dictated by class rules for racing (for example a 5-point or 6-point seat belt harness).
