Turbo diesel exhaust systems for trucks provide additional power and torque by increasing exhaust pipe diameter, increased flow through the muffler (if equipped), and pipe using smoother bends. This decreases backpressure, allowing exhaust gas to exit the tailpipe faster and frees up horsepower.

Upgrading the factory exhaust system on your turbo diesel truck with an aftermarket diesel exhaust kit will noticeably improve sound. Typically, the turbo (if equipped) spooling whistle is more noticeable along with a louder engine exhaust, giving you the custom sound you want that will sound great and turn heads when accelerating.

Diesel exhaust kits are designed to transfer exhaust gasses and sound from the engine to the rear of the vehicle to help protect the driver and passengers from toxic fumes and loud noise. Diesel truck exhaust kits are available in different options, depending on the year, make, and model. These options include turbo-back, cat-back, filter-back, and downpipe-back kits that bolt to the respective main parts.

A turbo back exhaust kit for diesel applications includes all of the exhaust components behind the turbocharger. Aftermarket diesel exhaust turbo back kits usually contain the down pipe and tail pipe along with the connecting pipe(s) between the two. The muffler may or may not be included in the design. Also included are clamps and hangers along with any hardware to help complete the installation.

A diesel exhaust fluid system (DEF) is a method of injecting deionized water / urea solution into the exhaust stream of 2010 or newer medium and heavy-duty diesel vehicles. It is designed to reduce NOx (nitrogen oxide) emissions by converting them into nitrogen and water.

Depending on the year, make, and model of the diesel vehicle, the temperatures can vary. In general, on diesel trucks in normal driving conditions, the average temperature inside the exhaust manifold is around 1100 degrees Fahrenheit. Inside the tailpipe, temperatures average around 700-800 degrees Fahrenheit if equipped with a diesel particulate filter and between 400-500 degrees Fahrenheit without a DPF.

Most diesel engines are either inline-six (one exhaust manifold) or turbocharged (with the engine exhaust entering one turbocharger) which results in only one pipe for the exhaust system to attach. Due to these designs, a "true-dual" exhaust is not possible. While there are dual exhausts available for diesel engines, they typically split after the muffler, catalytic converter, or filter. This is more for looks only and doesn't usually improve vehicle performance.

Turbocharged diesel fuel engines do not need exhaust backpressure to work. While backpressure creates heat, which increases turbine speed, the gains of a free-flowing exhaust outweigh the losses due to the reduction in backpressure. Reduced backpressure and slow down turbo spool-up on the low end of the engine power band. However, this can be corrected with a tuner or programmer as well as a cold air intake system.
