Fuel Pressure Regulator
Your vehicle's fuel system is critical for proper operation, as without it, performance will suffer or worse, your engine will not run at all. One of the major factors in proper fuel system function is pressure. The fuel pump creates this force to push fuel to the carburetor fuel bowls or to the fuel injector rails. Without enough pressure, fuel injectors will drip fuel instead of properly spray it and carburetor fuel bowls will empty quicker than they can be replenished. Too much fuel pressure will cause a carburetor and possibly the engine to flood with fuel. In fuel injection applications, injectors will spray too much fuel, causing a rich condition and possible engine flooding. A fuel pressure regulator reduces and maintains fuel pressure to the proper PSI, preventing these problems from happening. When failing, fuel pressure regulator symptoms include the above characteristics and can be confirmed with a fuel pressure gauge.
When choosing a regulator, first confirm the pressure your fuel system needs to properly operate. Most carburetors require 5-7 PSI, while many fuel injection systems can range between 20 - 70 PSI. It is important to select the fuel pressure regulator that will reduce pressure to the specific psi needed. Next, from the remaining options, choose the proper amount of ports and outlets, vacuum signal (for boosted applications), fuel pressure gauge port (if mounting directly to regulator is preferred) and finish that meets your needs and budget. Don't forget to also purchase any additional fuel system components such as adapters, fittings, and hose to help you complete your project.
