Nitrous System
An automotive nitrous system is a performance upgrade that injects a mixture of nitrous oxide ("dry" system) and fuel (for a "wet" system) into the engine's combustion chamber to increase power output. The system consists of a nitrous oxide tank, a delivery system, and a control unit. When activated, the control unit opens a valve that releases the nitrous oxide into the air intake stream, which mixes it with fuel and delivers it to the engine's intake manifold. The nitrous oxide breaks down into oxygen and nitrogen when heated, and the additional oxygen allows for a more complete combustion of the fuel, producing more power. Nitrous systems are typically used in racing applications and are often used in drag racing where short bursts of power can make a significant difference. However, improper installation or use can cause serious engine damage, so it is important to consult with a professional before installing a nitrous system.
When choosing from available nitrous systems, first confirm the proper delivery mount, whether for a carburetor (for example, square bore/4500/Dominator, etc.) or throttle body (the proper spacer or injection adapter). Next confirm the horsepower increase you want to add, that is determined by your engine's ability to handle the extra horsepower without damage.
