Steering Column
To turn the front wheels on your car or truck, the steering wheel needs to be rotated left or right. Responsible for connecting the steering wheel to the gear box or rack and pinion is the steering column. This component is essentially a long shaft inside of a tube, that extends the motion of the steering wheel to the steering gear box or rack in pinion in order to move the direction of the front wheels. On the outside of the steering column behind the steering wheel are often driving functions and switches such as wiper, cruise, turn signal, and hazard signal controls. Often an intermediate shaft is connected between the column and box or rack to make up the gap and allow easier removal and assembly for steering parts. When the bearings inside the column wear with time and use, steering column repair or replacement is necessary.
When selecting a replacement steering column for a factory vehicle, first confirm the year, make, model, and trim package. For custom applications, confirm the correct length of steering column, which is the distance from the end of the steering output shaft to the end of the steering column where the steering wheel connects. Then confirm options on the column such as manual/automatic shifter, ignition key cylinder, wipers, cruise control, hazard switch, and any other components. From the remaining compatible steering columns, choose the option that is best for your vehicle and budget. Don't forget to purchase any additional items or tools needed to complete installation such as a steering wheel puller, steering wheel column or floor mount, and a custom steering wheel (if desired).
