Valve Spring
Responsible for providing the proper tension on the drivetrain are the valve springs. At rest, and installed with retainers and keepers to the intake or exhaust valve, the valve spring pulls up on the valve, sealing it to the valve seat. When pressure is applied to the valve stem from the rocker arm, the spring is compressed and allowing the valve to open. Throughout the process, tension is put on all of the moving parts to keep everything properly connected. Too tight of valve springs will cause rapid wear on the camshaft, while too light of tension will cause "valve float", resulting in valves that don't fully seat, resulting in performance issues.
When selecting replacement valve springs for your engine, first confirm the year, make, model, and engine size. Then, from the remaining compatible valve spring sets, select the option that fits your budget. For custom and performance applications, first find the correct spring rate to match your camshaft. Next confirm the proper installed height, as well as outside and inside diameter to ensure they will fit in the spring pockets of your engine's cylinder heads. Don't forget additional components and tools such as retainers, locks/keepers, valve spring compressor, and other items needed to complete the project.
