Magnaflow OBD-II 49-State & Canada Universal Catalytic Converters are designed for engines built in 1996 or after. Each converter has a ribbed stainless steel body that minimizes expansion and distortion when the converter heats up. The ribs form a channel that protects the cushioning mat from direct exposure to exhaust gas and they hold the ceramic catalyst in proper alignment. An aluminized or stainless OE-style ribbed heat shield creates a rigid wall of protection against heat and adds to the structural stability of the converter. Magnaflow converters have a 1/2" lap-joint where the necks meet the body. The neck does not extend into the converter body where it could hamper exhaust flow. This is the strongest and smoothest flowing inlet/outlet joint of any manufacturer. A monolithic honeycomb catalyst is utilized. The ceramic is designed for maximum flow and surface area. The coating method is strictly controlled to maintain exact specifications. .

Selecting the Proper OBD-II Universal-Fit Catalytic Converter
Determine engine size and vehicle weight first. Converters are listed according to legal engine size and vehicle weight. Determine the type of converter being replaced. PRE OBD-II converters are for vehicles built before 1996. If the vehicle was built in 1996 or after, an OBD-II converter must be used. If engine has been changed and is not the same model year as the chassis, proceed as follows:

  • If the engine is older than the chassis, select the converter according to the chassis model year.
  • If the engine is newer than the chassis, select the converter according to the engine requirement.

Check whether the vehicle is Federal or California Emissions. Required by the EPA, this information is on the vehicle emission control information label (example shown below) located in the engine compartment in a visible position on the hood underside, shock tower, radiator support, fan shroud, or firewall.

Note: Federal emissions 49-state catalytic converters are not legal for sale, installation, or use on licensed vehicles in the state of California.
