Carburetor
Atomization of fuel and air is required for proper combustion to occur as well as control of engine RPMs. To help make this happen, a carburetor is used. When the engine is first started and rotates, vacuum is created from the opening and closing of valves. This causes fuel to be drawn from the carburetor nozzles and mixed with incoming air. Once ignited, the engine increases in rpms further drawing additional fuel and air and maintaining running operation. To manage engine speed, carburetor "butterflies" / flaps meter the amount of air that enters the engine. These are attached to a throttle shaft near the base of the carburetor, which is connected to a throttle cable and pedal, so that the driver can control engine speed. A slight opening of the flaps is required in order for the engine to start so that air can enter the engine. This is adjusted with the idle screw.

When selecting a carburetor, it is important to choose the correct CFM size that matches engine displacement, maximum engine speed / rpms that will be used, and the application the engine will be used for (ex, street, race, etc.). It is also important that the carburetor matches the intake manifold mounting bolt pattern, and the type of choke is selected (typically manual, electric, or no choke).
