Torque Converter
In automatic transmission-equipped vehicles, the torque converter replaces the clutch found in stick-shift applications. Torque converters allow a connection between the engine crankshaft and flexplate to the transmission while the engine is running and the vehicle is not moving. This is possible by the torque converter "slipping" at engine idle and not applying power to the transmission input shaft, which transfers rotational energy to the rest of the drivetrain. Once engine rpms are increased, centrifugal force causes the internal components of the torque converter to expand, aided by transmission fluid. Engagement of the transmission input shaft then occurs, rotating the rest of the drivetrain components to the wheels. In performance applications with radical camshafts, a "stall converter" is required. This type of converter has a stall speed at a higher rpm than factory specifications to match the camshaft's rpm power band, preventing boggy acceleration off the line. It also allows a lopey/thumping cammed engine to continue running and not die when the transmission is put in gear at idle.

Symptoms of a bad torque converter include slipping at higher engine rpms, noise, fluid leaks, engine dying when vehicle put in gear, vehicle bog during low rpm acceleration or no increase in vehicle speed when raising engine rpms while in gear. When choosing a new torque converter, it's important to match the camshaft power band, transmission type, flexplate bolt pattern, bellhousing type, and horsepower rating to ensure proper installation and long service life
